Join the IOP as we welcome MP (Wayanad, Kerala) and former President of the Indian National Congress (INC) Rahul Gandhi. First elected to the Lok Sabha (India’s lower house of Parliament) in 2004, Gandhi belongs to the politically powerful Nehru-Gandhi family. He is the great-grandson of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, and son of PM Rajiv Gandhi and grandson of PM Indira Gandhi.
In 2019, Gandhi lead the INC’s unsuccessful general election campaign against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and affiliated Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. Following the loss, Gandhi stepped down as INC President.
Gandhi is outspoken against the abrogation of Article 370, which eliminated Kashmir’s constitutional independence, and the ongoing human rights violations by Kashmir’s government. He has also criticized BJP’s COVID-19 response and recent removal of state protection for farmers.
This program will be moderated by Dipesh Chakrabarty, Lawrence A. Kimpton Distinguished Service Professor of History, South Asian Languages, and South Asian Civilization at the University of Chicago. Professor Chakrabarty also served as the Faculty Director of UChicago's Center in Delhi.
